UK truck deaths: Vietnam makes new arrests

Police in Vietnam have arrested eight people n connection with 39 bodies found in a truck outside the British capital London in late October.

The victims of that tragedy are all thought to be from Vietnam.

Thousands of people leave the country every year in search of a better life, many of them traveling underground with the help of smugglers.

Official Vietnamese state media reported the arrests on Monday (November 4), quoting a local police chief who said, "We will actively launch investigations to fight and eradicate these rings which bring people illegally to Britain." According to the report, police are treating the tragedy as a smuggling incident rather than a case of human trafficking.

Vietnam has called the deaths a "humanitarian tragedy" and said it was working with British police to identify the victims. British police charged two men with manslaughter over the deaths last week.

A delegation from Vietnam has traveled to the UK and is due to meet with British officials on Monday (November 4).
