Before merle haggard was a country music superstar, he was just boy from a boxcar in oildale.
His childhood home was the feature attraction today at the kern county museum.
17's daniel tran joins us with a look at the boxcar festival.
Daniel: kristin, hundreds of people showed up to the kern county museum for the grand opening of the haggard house exhibit.
It's a chance to explore the home that inspired so many songs from country music legend, merle haggard.
Daniel: once a 1910 santa fe railroad refrigerator car - the haggard house now memorialized at the kern county museum symbolizes so much more.
Roger tripp: "it's a piece of history that needs to be preserved because people need to know that he wasn't just a singer.
In my mind, he's the greatest singer that ever walked the planet."
County music star and bakersfield native merle haggard grew up in the boxcar in oildale.
Reminents of the past visible at every turn.
Jim haggard: "parents would come and drop me off, and i'd sleep here at the house with my grandmother.
And i took baths in the old tub in there so you'll have to look at it."
Daniel: family members and friends shared their memories of haggard.
Theresa haggard: "he liked those humble beginnings.
He liked life.
You know, he wrote about life and the emotions that go long with it."
Fans lined up as country music filled the air at pioneer village for the boxcar festival.
James carothers traveled from tennessee to peform at the festival to honor the hag who he says is on his mount rushmore of country singers.
James carothers: "i can't wait to go through that house, man.
Like a time machine.
Daniel: haggard died april 6 of last year on his 79th birthday.
But his legacy is forever embeded in bakersfield.
Theresa haggard: "you can feel them in there; the love.
Everything in there is precise and just perfect."
Daniel: if you missed the festival, you can still see the haggard house at the kern pioneer village tuesday through sunday throughout the year.
