Police are searching for a murder suspect tonight... after a 30-year- old woman was found dead on madison's east side.

Police discovered the body shortly after 4 this morning just across from the salvation army parking lot near darbo drive.

In the last half hour ... the dane county medical examiner identified her as amanda woods.

A preliminary investigation determined she died from quote "sharp-force related trauma."

Jamie perez is live -- with the latest on the city's first homicide of the year.

Police cleared this scene around noon today after wrapping up their search of this area.

This is the field where that woman's body was found.

Police say they have had issues related to violence happening in this area in years past, but in recent years this area hasn't been much of a problem.

But people i spoke with who live around here have mixed feelings about the safety of the neighborhood, especially since this homicide happened.

Damonte thompson, resident 17:35:59 "i'm speechless.

I can't say nothing about that man.

It happened at 4 o clock in the morning so it's a good thing everyone was in the house sleeping damonte thompson lives in these apartments across from where the first homicide of the year happened.

He says he generally feels safe in this community.

Lavette brown says she feels differently knowing this type of thing happened so close to her new home.

"i just moved here yesterday.

I didn't know darbo was like this because i've lived her before.

So i didn't know darbo was going to be like this."

Police say the woman who was killed in this field was visiting friends at these apartments.

They say she stepped outside around 4 in the morning but never came back in.

Her friends found her lying in this field and performed life saving measures on her until police got here.

Take sot: joel despain, madison police pio 17:32:03-11 ( 8 seconds) "at this point we don't know whether or not she knew the person who killed her so there is some danger to the community right now.

I don't think we can discount that" for lavette brown that isn't discounted at all.

"just because this just happened, it don't seem like it's a safe area."

Police arent commenting on how the woman was killed, but they are looking for evidence they can find that may give them some potential leads.

This investigation required all hands on deck.

Police are still investigating this.
