Bananas Facing Extinction Due to Deadly Fungus

A deadly fungus known as Tropical Race 4 (TR4) has been plaguing banana growers since the 1990s, but was confined to Southeast Asia.Recently, the fungus which renders banana plants infertile has spread as far as the Middle East, Africa, and now Latin America according to Colombian authorities.

Latin America is the primary producer and exporter of bananas in the world and unfortunately, the cavendish bananas they grow are intentionally cultivated in a way that makes them less genetically diverse. This makes them particularly susceptible to TR4, which affects the plants ability to genetically reproduce and which currently has no effective fungicide or treatment.
