It doesn't take much to hide Calvin So's scars.

But there's no hiding away from the brutal impact of recent violence in Hong Kong.

The 23-year-old says he was picked on at random and beaten to the ground as he tried to make his way home from work on Sunday (June 21).

The attackers were a mob of suspected gangsters, who appeared to target anti-government protesters.

(SOUNDBITE) (Cantonese) 23-YEAR-OLD VICTIM, CALVIN SO, SAYING : ''It was really scary at that time, I just did not realize what was happening.

I just know I was attacked by canes, by rods, and then once again the ropes.

I wasn't clear what was really hitting me, because I was trying to protect myself and I was unable to see anything.

But I did see them holding those things before.

It's hard to say what hit me, but I am now covered in bruises, everyone can see it clearly.

I was scared.

What I felt most was fear.'' The weekend attack at this metro station opened new fronts in Hong Kong's widening crisis, as tempers flared once again over an extradition bill to send people to China for trial.

It came after protesters had surrounded Beijing's main office in the territory - scrawling graffiti and defacing the national emblem.

While recovering in hospital Calvin has been able to identify himself in footage of the attack by suspected triad gangsters.

Now he wants the government to listen more to the public opinion.

He says the violence has left him feeling unsafe in Hong Kong.

He won't be alone.
