Sotheby's holds first-ever rare sneaker auction

Auction house Sotheby's held a first-of-its-kind auction with 100 pairs of the rarest shoes ever produced up for grabs, including a replica of the futuristic self-lacing shoes from the 1989 sequel to Back To The Future and sneakers owned by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Jayson Albano reports.

Sotheby's holds first-ever rare sneaker auction

Sotheby's is auctioning off some of the rarest sneakers ever produced, and they don't come cheap.

These Nike MAGs, replicas of sneakers from the film Back To The Future, are expected to fetch up to 70 thousand dollars.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NOAH WUNSCH, SOTHEBY'S GLOBAL HEAD OF ECOMMERCE, SAYING: "This is one of the very, very limited ones because they actually self-lace." But if those boots are a little too futuristic for your taste, you could settle for a pair of these: the Nike 'Moon Shoe'.

They're one of only 12 pairs in existence, designed for runners at the 1972 Olympics trials and handmade - with a waffle iron.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NOAH WUNSCH, SOTHEBY'S GLOBAL HEAD OF ECOMMERCE, SAYING: "So with something like the Nike 'Moon Shoes' that are probably the rarest, potentially rarest sneakers period.

They have a low estimate of $110,000 dollars." The shoe sale is a first for the auction house, known for selling fine art and rare jewels.

Sotheby's says sneakers have been fast growing as collectibles, so much so that it's giving fine art and rare jewelry a run for their money.

There are only men's kicks up for grabs here, but women are eyeing the sale too.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NOAH WUNSCH, SOTHEBY'S GLOBAL HEAD OF ECOMMERCE, SAYING: "I do think there are gonna be a number of female bidders in this as well too for collectors in the sneaker category.

In some cases, it's not about wearing the shoes.

They view this as works of art.

If you're lucky, you could take home a pair of Karl Lagerfeld's sneakers - for a modest 35, 000 dollars.

Or the Air Jordan 11 'Derek Jeter' sneakers, an homage to the baseball icon, and estimated to cost 40 to 60 thousand dollars.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NOAH WUNSCH, SOTHEBY'S GLOBAL HEAD OF ECOMMERCE, SAYING: "I think it's a really fascinating time in the world, period, where it's it's not so much sneaker culture, it's just culture." The online sale ends on July 23rd.
