U.S. House committee seeks Trump tax returns from IRS

U.S. House committee seeks Trump tax returns from IRS

House democrats have formally demanded Donald Trump's tax returns from the IRS.

On Wednesday evening (April 3), Richard Neal - the Democratic head of the U.S. House Committee - issued a request for six years of the U.S. President's personal and business tax returns.

Trump broke decades of precedent during his 2016 campaign when he refused to release his tax returns.

He claimed he was 'under audit' by the IRS, a claim he continued to make on Wednesdsay when asked whether he'd release the returns.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "We're under audit, despite what people said and we're that out as I'm always under audit it seems. // But until such time as I'm not under audit I would not be inclined to do that." Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, recently testified in Congress that he didn't believe the president was being audited but may have used the audit claim to avoid tax penalties.

Congressional Republicans have hit back, saying that confidential tax documents of a U.S. citizen shouldn't be turned into a political weapon.

The committee's request is expected to lead to a long court battle with the White House.
