Markets slump as Huawei arrest rekindles US-China trade fears

LONDON - A wave of selling hit world stockmarkets Thursday after the arrest of a top executive at Chinese telecoms giant Huawei raised doubts over the recent trade truce agreed by US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

A truce in the U.S.-China trade war could come to a rapid end. China's Huawei Technologies Company Limited is one of the world's largest tech companies. But their CFO, who also happens to be the daughter of the company's founder and CEO, was arrested in Canada last weekend for extradition to the United States. U.S. authorities have not disclosed circumstances surrounding Meng's arrest, but a source says the arrest relates to violations of U.S. trade sanctions.
