As waters surged in the Ural river, flooding nearby villages and triggering the rupture of a dam in Orsk, thousands are now being evacuated from the Russian Ural mountains in the Orenburg region.

State media, citing local officials, reported the unfolding emergency on Friday (Apr 5).

In an urgent video message circulated on the messaging app Telegram, Orenburg Mayor Sergei Salmin emphasised the critical nature of the situation, urging residents of riverside settlements to promptly evacuate for their safety.

“Don’t wait for the situation to become threatening!
