WHO Declares Mpox Is No Longer a Public Health Emergency

WHO Declares Mpox Is No Longer , a Public Health Emergency.

On May 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) said its 10-month mpox global health emergency was coming to an end, Reuters reports.

.

The viral disease was first declared a global health emergency in July 2022.

Mpox ultimately spread to over 100 countries, Reuters reports.

With the public health emergency coming to an end, experts say a transition is necessary for managing long-term mpox health risks.

.

For example, rather than utilizing emergency measures, mpox response and preparedness should now be monitored by disease surveillance programs. Such programs include those for HIV and STIs.

.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said nearly 90% less mpox cases were recorded within the last three months.

The WHO also recently ended its public health emergency for COVID.

.

However, the director-general warned that the diseases should still be taken seriously.

While the emergencies of mpox and COVID-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both.

Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, via statement
