Rep.

Scott DesJarlais has called for an amendment to the Constitution that would require presidential nominees to show proof of "cognitive competence.".

The amendment holds that, "No person shall be eligible to hold the office of President or Vice President unless the person demonstrates cognitive competence.".

Fox News reports that the amendment also gives Congress the authority to determine how to test candidates for president and vice president.

The news comes just days after presidential candidate Nikki Haley called for "mental competency tests" for lawmakers over the age of 75.

Last week, when Haley announced her candidacy, she said it was time for the "permanent politician" to step aside.

.

She reportedly added that while America is not past its prime, "our politicians are past theirs.".

According to Fox News, both statements were widely perceived as a dig at both President Biden and former President Trump.

The news also follows 89-year-old Sen.

Dianne Feinstein announcing her retirement amid recent signs of mental decline.

This should be a completely nonpartisan issue and all Americans deserve leaders that are mentally competent.

How this is not already a requirement codified in law defies logic, Scott DesJarlais, U.S. representative for Tennessee's 4th congressional district, via Fox News.
