'Newsweek' reports that the new standards, set an average of 49 miles per gallon, for new cars by 2026.

According to a statement from NHTSA, fuel efficiency will increase by 8% in 2024 and 2025, then by 10% in 2026.

In the statement, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said that the new set of standards will help save Americans money.

Buttigieg also said that the new standards leave the U.S. less vulnerable to shifting global oil prices while also reducing emissions and pollution.

'Newsweek' reports that vehicles on highways, release nearly 1.6 billion tons of greenhouse gases, into the atmosphere every year.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a single gallon of gas creates about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide.

The NHTSA statement said the new standards would reduce carbon emissions by 2.5 billion metric tons.

They will also help Americans get 33% more miles per gallon in 2026.
