A study from Georgetown University has identified trends that are preventing young Americans from achieving economic independence.

According to 'The Independent,' the most startling of those trends is the huge increase in the cost of college versus pay since 1980.

The evidence of our failure to help all youth make the long journey from early childhood to adult economic independence is plain, Study authors, via 'The Independent'.

In the trajectory from kindergarten to a good job, the most talented disadvantaged youth do not fare nearly as well as the least talented advantaged youth, Study authors, via 'The Independent'.

The authors also found trends of racial and class inequalities.

One of the biggest barriers is the cost of higher education.

The Georgetown research showed a 169% increase in the average cost of college since 1980.

In the same period of time, the average income of 22- to 27-year-olds only increased by 19%.

In the 1970s, 75% of jobs required just a high school diploma.

According to 'The Independent,' two-thirds of jobs now require either some post-secondary education, work experience or prior training.

'The Independent' reports that K-12 education has focused more on college preparation rather than workforce preparation.

This means that those who can't afford college have been left even further behind and with less options.
