Dogs in Miami are Being Trained to Detect COVID-19

Dogs trained for detecting smells are being taught a new scent: COVID-19.

Two specially trained dogs, Cobra and One Betta, are part of a pilot program out of Miami International Airport that inspects employees.

A month into the program, the dogs have detected two cases: One staff member tested positive while the other was recovering from COVID-19.

The project launched the last week of August and has been extended to October, thanks to a partnership between the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, Global Forensic and Justice Center, and Florida International University.

Dr. Kenneth Furton, provost and executive vice president of Florida International University, hopes the success will continue.

According to Furton, the dogs are 97.5% accurate in detecting the virus.
