The Woman Who Is Allergic To Sunlight | BORN DIFFERENT

AT three years old, Karine de Souza, 30, from Brazil, was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum - a rare skin disease that can cause severe sunburn after only a few minutes in the sun and severe pigmentation.

This has meant that Karine has spent most of her life indoors, with the curtains closed, only venturing out when the sun is setting.

โ€œI never had a life like a normal life,โ€ she told Truly.

โ€œI don't usually go out, my life is indoors.

I felt very suffocated having to stay inside all day.โ€ She has undergone over 200 surgeries to remove cancerous skin tumours from her body, during that time sheโ€™s had her lower lip and the tip of her nose removed because of the melanomas.

In the last procedure she had, doctors found a lesion that wasnโ€™t superficial, like all the ones before.

This time, the lesion was in her head and she underwent an extremely delicate and slow surgery to have it removed.

Karine posted an emotional message to social media, speaking about the difficulties she was going through.

In response, her followers started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for her recovery.

They exceeded the target within 24 hours, and the extra money was spent on building Karine a new, bigger house adapted for her needs which she could feel freer in.

Despite the setbacks sheโ€™s faced in life, Karine remains positive.

โ€œAs long as I have life, I will keep on fighting, because where there is life, there is hope.โ€ Donate to help Karine here - https://www.vakinha.com.br/vaquinha/me-ajude-a-fazer-a-adaptacao-da-minha-nova-casa Follow Karineโ€™s journey here - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009168656311 https://www.instagram.com/kah05oficial/
