How to see if 'Emergency Wireless Alerts' are turned on for your phone

Having multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts is crucial.

And your smartphone can be your first line of defense.

Storm team 10's david siple is live in terre haute.

He joins us to explain how to make sure these alerts are turned on.

All so you can stay safe and aware during times of bad weather.

David?

Kevin as you just said it is very important to get those alerts when they happen.

So what i want you at home to do is to take out your phone.

I'll show iphone users, since i have an iphone, how to check to see if you have the wireless emergency alerts turned on, on your smartphone.

First go to your general settings app.

The app with the gear heads on it.

Scroll down to the orange notifications tab and click on that.

Once this is open, scroll to the very bottom of your screen past all of your apps.

Then at the bottom, you will notice a government alerts section.

You'll notice three alerts.

Amber alerts, emergency alerts, and public safety alerts.

You need to have these alerts turned on especially the emergency alerts enabled so if severe weather does threaten your area, you will be notified.

Now there are ways you can test this function.

I have put this test on our website on this story at wthitv.com.

I have also put detailed instructions for android users on there as well.

Reporting live in terre haute david siple.
