The pandemic forced teachers to adapt.

Virtual learning is typically not ideal.

Claire millsaps took on that challenge in style, and her second graders at big ridge recenty scored very well on their benchmark tests.

Her virtual learning program earned ms. millsaps tonight's... golden apple award.

Natural sound: so on behalf of food city and news channel 12, i would like to present you miss millsaps with this weeks golden apple teacher award.

Oh my gosh!!!

Jeana: miss millsaps is our second grade teacher and this year she has been completely virtual.

Natural sound: i wish i could share all of these apples with you guys.

Jeana: and is well deserved of the golden apple award because she has gone above and beyond this year teaching her students.

Natural sound colon and i want everybody to think about what our rules are for today.

Claire: hi i'm a... i'm a teacher.

I love these kids.

Big ridge really is the best place to teach and learn and i've taught at a lot of schools in hamilton county.

I have been here for about 15 years.

So it's been a while.

Our kids love learning.

And they show up every day.

Not just physically but they really like bring it to class.

Joshitha: she wants to like express her feelings.

What she is feeling outside of the in the winter.

But she said if i got cold it would kind of be a little boring.

Claire: i did not know how i would do teaching virtually.

Obviously this is not something that we ever thought that we might do.

But i really loved it.

We did not get a lot of direction at the beginning of the year on how to teach virtually.

You know it was one of those things that way, nobody really knew what it was going to look like.

So getting that set up in august and september like getting off the ground was tricky.

But once we get off the ground we haven't stopped.

It is my absolute mission that these kids have an excellent school year.

That they have a positive experience that they like school that they do you know look forward to coming to class every day.

And that this in someway lifts them at any time that can be really heavy and hard.

Natural sound: i will see you guys tomorrow at 9 o'clock.

And i will see you soon.

All right... all right.
