Myanmar protests lead to Thai border closure

Weeks of demonstrations in the Myanmar town of Tachileik have led to the closure of the border with Thailand's Mae Sai, the most northerly Thai town.

Normally there are long queues of vehicles on both sides of the Friendship Bridge as the crossing is known.

According to the Bangkok Post, 33 Thai-owned trucks carrying farm produce are stuck in Tachileik, along with 70 Thai citizens.

Cross-border trade was worth 165 billion baht last year, according to the Thai Commerce Ministry's Foreign Trade Department, the Bangkok Post reported.

Myanmar usually imports petroleum and household goods and exports agricultural products through the crossing.

The Myanmar flags have been removed from the bridge, according to Newsflare's filmer.
