The European Commission authorized the vaccine on Wednesday following a recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
The EMA made its recommendation earlier that day, saying it had “thoroughly assessed the data” and passed it on to the European Commission.

EMA’s human medicines committee has thoroughly assessed the data on the quality, safety and efficacy of the vaccine and recommended by consensus a formal conditional marketing authorization be granted by the European Commission, EMA, via CNBC.
In a statement, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said the EU would gain an additional 160 million doses with “more vaccines [to] come.” .
