Chico schools analyze coronavirus aid from the state for in-person instruction

The state of California recently announced a $2 billion plan to help schools reopen in-person instruction by the spring.

Governor gavin newsom recently announced a plan for schools to resume in-person teaching for next spring.

The plan also includes a 2 billion dollar aid for coronavirus testing p-p-e& and classroom ventilation.

How will this plan impact schools within the chico unified school district?

Debbie&this plan averages out to schools receiving $450 per student across the state.

Here in chico& that means the district will receive 5 and a half million dollars in aid for the roughly 12 thousand students.

While this money is a one-time grant&it will hopefully incentivize in- person instruction to continue in the area.

I spoke with assistant superintendent kevin bultema about what he hopes this money will do for the schools.

Kevin bultema/cusd assistant superintendent: "really the learning loss that has occurring in this environment and really dollars that we can hopefully prioritize to put towards mitigating that loss.

Really getting more time with teachers and students in front of each other and engaged with each other to try and improve learning as best we can in what is a really difficult environment."

The assistant superintendent also told me that receiving this grant money would mean that they would be able to test students and teachers for covid-19 once every two weeks to help make students and staff alike more comfortable in the classroom.

He also hopes to incorporate this money directly in the classroom where learning can this plan also allows for the continuation of continuation of remote learning for parents and students who wish to
