Louisiana prepares for Hurricane Delta

The streets of southwest Louisiana are deserted as the state braces for Hurricane Delta, which is threatening to add misery to people struggling to recover from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Laura less than two months ago.

Mayor of Lake Charles, Nic Hunter has a warning for residents who choose to stay: “...if people have chosen to stay, they need to understand, this is a very difficult thing to say and it pains me to say it, but there is going to be a window of time where public safety cannot respond to you.

(flash) There's going to be a period where it's just not safe to get out on the roads.

And so they need to hunker down as best they can." As of early Friday, Delta was packing winds of 120 miles per hour, and slated to make landfall Friday night.

Across the state's southwest, schools and government offices closed, residents boarded windows and moved out of the storm's path.

Hurricane Laura, which struck the city in late August, damaged tens of thousands of homes and left more than 6,000 people still living temporarily in hotels.

When Delta reaches the northern Gulf Coast, it will be the 10th named storm to make a U.S. landfall this year, eclipsing a record that has stood since 1916.
