Vehicle almost tips over as driver battles through flooded street in Malaysia

A driver almost topples over while travelling through a severely flooded road in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday (September 10).

Onlookers cheered when the car - which looked perilously close to tipping over - successfully emerged from the deluge in the capital.

Tropical rain storms lasted for several hours, causing drains to become blocked and water to fill the roads.

Among the worst-affected areas were Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Campbell, the Ampang highway (near Bank Simpanan Nasional) and the Wangsa Maju LRT station.

Residents were seen struggling to walk through the water-engulfed pavements while carrying umbrellas.

Commuters were forced to drive through the flood-filled streets with some areas reporting waist-high water.

The Federal Territories ministry, Annuar Musa said: "The ministry will take into account whether the flood mitigation system and SMART Tunnel, which cost billions to build, are functioning well." Malaysia and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, as well as China and Japan in the Far East, are at the peak of the annual rainy season, that sees regular tropical storms until cooler weather arrives towards the late October.
