Good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm cash matlock governor tate reeves declares a state of emergency in response to tropical storms laura and marco, which are expected to make landfall early next week.

Reeves says the possibility of two storms hitting the u.s. within a week of each other has come up ten times since 1869.

Reeves says his team is monitoring both storms. he says there's a lot to learn about these storms over the next few days before they'll know what's going to happen.

The governor made the announcement at today's press conference at the mississippi emergency management agency headquarters, which you can view on wcbi dot com.

You can also look at the signed state of emergency declaration on our website.

For the latest on these two storms we're going to hand things over to meteorlogist trevor birchett for the first look at our forecast.

Locally, sunday looks to be pretty nice with limited rain chances.

We're keeping our eyes on the tropics where two storms are expected to make landfall within a matter of hours of each other, which could also bring us some rain through the week.

Tropical update: tropical storm laura and tropical storm marco are strengthening in the caribbean.

Gary d.

Stanton with mississippi highway patrol says troopers witnessed a black jeep suv going 28 miles per hour over the speed limit on highway 278 around 4:30 friday.

When the trooper tried to pull the driver of the jeep over, they refused to stop.

The driver of the jeep lead troopers and pontotoc police on a chase for more than 20 miles before crashing into a ditch.

No injuries were reported from the crash.

Troopers say the jeep contained over three thousand dollars worth of stolen inventory from a local hardware store.

The jeep was also reported as a stolen vehicle from alabama the day before.

The suspects are currently in the pontotoc county jail facing charges of grand larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, speeding, and several others.

Mbi, ponototoc police, and the oxford police department are investigation the incident.

The mississippi state department of health reports 945 new cases of covid-19 with 23 new deaths.

There are 38 new cases among long term care facilities within the state.

Covid-19 hospitalizations are still high, but are on a decline.

Since march 11, the total number of cases is more than 77 thousand with more than 2 thousand deaths.

It's presumed that more than 56 thousand mississippians have recovered from the virus.

College students are away from home---perhaps feeling more freedom.

But governor tate reeves warns they can't let that translate to ignoring coronavirus safety guidelines.

Courtney ann jackson explains what she learned.

Ignoring the governor's executive orders with large house parties, for example, could mean more than a slap on the wrist for mississippi's college students.

Because in most instances---that is considered a violation of the school's student code of conduct.

The university of southern mississippi vice president of student affairs..

"we're really trying to stress to our students and help them understand that their actions have a big impact on others and it's not just about them."

In a video message to the campus community by noel wilkin, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs also stressing the need for compliance.

"we hope that everyone will embrace their role in keeping our communities safe.

We can be together if you follow the protocols, including when you're not in class."

But what if they ignore those guidelines, including the governor's order regarding the limits on numbers of people at a social gathering---even off campus?

"we have a whole host of options.

We can do a verbal warning, an educational piece, all the way up to suspension of an individual or organization.

Now, that would certainly be something that be very serious if we went all the way to that extreme.

And i'm anticipating we will not have to do that."

Mississippi state sending a "weekend reminders" note to students.

One bullet point specifically warns them not to host a party or gathering...on or off campus---saying students could face sanctions---even suspension or expulsion.

Our savannah gaido has more on the story.

Laptops are this years most crucial back to school necessity and remote learning has caused a laptop shortage in the us "well becasue of the pandemic that were having because of covid 19, there has been an insurange of people that are wanting to get laptops and tablets for each individual of the house instead of just having one or two per household, youre looking at four or five per household because each child is having to get on to do hybrid classes or having to do completely online, you are looking at five to six hours per day per child" because laptops are in high demand, computer technician john potter says computers are are being pushed to the limit.

"laptops are built to last 3 to 5 years minimum and now we are seeing some that might not even last 6 months because of some having to use them 8, 10 or even 12 hours a day."

In order maintain your computer, potter recommends to blow it out with canned or compressed air to keep the fan clean adn put them on a hard surface to get the correct amount of air flow "making sure they they arent moving them around too much when they are turned on because if it gets bumped significantly it can actually maket the hard drive go bad.

And making sure that they dont have any liquid around them because if you spill something on them obviously its going to take it out."

Demand is higher than supply - and potter believes this wont be ending soon "since we still dont know a whole lot about the covid virus, it could go on for several more months, it could actually last for years.

-- because just like stuff weve seen going into walmart and buying your groceries, weve seen big shortages and stuff like that, so it could last a long time."

In a rare saturday session, house democrats and republicans clashed as they prepared to vote on legislation that would provide billions in funding to the postal service.

The coronavirus is expected to prompt a flood of mail-in ballots.

But comments from president trump against mail-in voting and reports of service slowdowns have raised a firestorm.

Cbs news correspondent michael george reports from new york.

As they prepared to vote, house democrats said the postal service legislation is needed to protect the november election.

''it is so angering for americans across the political spectrum that president trump and postmaster dejoy openly sabotaged the postal service in order to prevent people from casting votes through the mail.'' the democrat- sponsored bill calls for the cash-strapped postal service to receive an extra $25 billion dollars in funding.

House republicans slammed the legislation, which would also reverse recent postal service changes amid concerns about mail-in voting.

''this bill is a sham/it's a shame.'' ''is this part of some vast conspiracy?

No.

It's part of a decades- long realignment process where the post office is trying to address the needs of consumers to the post office infrastructure.'' after a barrage of criticism, postmaster general louis dejoy said he would halt cost- cutting moves until after the presidential election.

On friday, he told a senate committee recent delays will not affect mail in voting.

''the postal service is fully capable and committed to delivering the nation's election mail securely and on time.'' but dejoy said he would not restore mailboxes and sorting machines that have been removed.

President trump, a vocal critic of mail-in balloting, is now saying he will deploy law enforcement to polling places.

It's a suppress- the-vote tactic, as is the suppressing of the ability of the postal system to deliver on its responsibility.

It's unclear if the president has the authority to bring officers to the polls on election day.

Michael george/cbs news the legislation is not expected to be taken up in the republican- controlled senate and president trump promises to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.

We're going to take a quick break but when we come back trevor will have
