Traditional tribal crafts shown off at fair in Bangkok, Thailand

Traditional crafts were displayed at an event in Thailand this week.

Villagers living in hill tribes showed ancient weaving techniques, hand-painting, stitching and other traditions and customs. The event in the capital Bangkok was organised by the SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand.

Sophisticated wood carving along with the traditional hand-painted vase and miniature wooden Thai houses were some of the highlights of the exhibition, which was staged throughout this week.

Organisers said the handicraft fair promotes local heritage and allows small-scale producers of the handmade goods from different parts of Thailand to network and sell their products directly to suppliers in the city.

The business chain provides an income for impoverished villagers with indigenous tribal people.

Many of the items can then be sold in retail outlets and in the tourism industry.
