Bob the Drag Queen Teaches You Drag Slang

- Hello, Vanity Fair.

Myname is Bob the Drag Queen.I'm here to teach you some drag slang, little bit of lingo, littlebit of the Queen's English.[cheerful beat music]A bar queen is a queen who hasmade her career in thebars, in the gay bars.'Cause there's club kidsand there's bar queens.I am a proud bar queen, here's a sentence.Look at that bar queen over there, walking around with afist full of singles. No tea no shade is when someone's like, listen, all bull [beeps]aside, this is the reality.I'm not being shady, I'm just being real.Miss thing no tea, no shadethis color is not good on you.Clock.

All right, now clock, this is a,Clock has some problematicundertones to it.I want just everyone to know that clock iswhen someone identifies something in youthat people think you are trying to hide. For example, when someone goes,"Oh, miss thing your hairline is clocked."That means like I cansee the lace on yourwig, and that is a wig, like you been, we clocked your wig.Hog body was made properly fromRuPaul's drag race, season six.And it is in reference to the specificallyAdore Delano didn't wear a corset. And she said that she has hog bodywhen she's not wearing a corset. So it's just like having a beer-belly.It's the gay versionof having a beer-belly.Eleganza extravaganza. So elanganza extravaganzais essentially a way ofsaying like, something isextremely elegant and extravagant. So you'll, or you'll do like a big ball. This is, this is like a derivativeof ballroom culture, but it's notdirectly from ballroom culture. It's essentially like talkinglike people in ballroom.Mug is the face, this is the mug. This is where the mug lifts. So somebody goes, I wannaget closer to that mugwhat they're saying is I would liketo get a shot of aclose shot of your face.Serving face. When you are serving face, you're giving the mug.you are giving the look, it's essentiallylike we walked in the base category.it's not just likehaving a beautiful face. It's a lot of this, it ismiss thing is serving face.when she's giving you one of these. You'll see a queen forlike doing her makeup. And go, Miss thing shereally serving face tonight.Heather.Okay Heather is a term inreference to the movie Heathers. And if you are a Heather, you're a very pretty girl. You're one of the cool girls. So the Heathers are the cool girls. And you just call each other Heather.Hey Heather, Oh hey Heather, hey Heather.Purse first, I popularizedthe term purse first myself. It is a phrase I cameup with on drag race.I was asked by Thorgy how I walkedinto the runway my very first time. And I said, well, Iwalked out purse first. And then it kinda becamelike a catch phrase. It's just like, it's just like a phraseyou shout out when you're feelingyes miss thing pursefirst, purse first honey.A boobie bib or a breast plateis probably the most, proper term for it is like,it looks, I don't knowhow else to describe it.It looks like breasts, likelarge breasts, like a necklace.Imagine if there was a necklace and breastcombined into one, youstrap it behind your neck. And then you use your wordnecklace to conceal the c.Hunty is essentially the word hype.So it's like, Oh yes, huntyshe's feeling it tonight.Painted.So when you you've done your makeupand then it looks extremely good. You are painted likeyour makeup is so over.So over the top you would say, miss thing, you are painted on this night.Squirrel friends, it just girlfriends.Like, it's just a goofyway of saying girlfriends. So, these are my squirrel friends. We love hanging out and justlike [chittering noises]like chittering your cheddar together?Like squirrels, do I don't knowhow squirrels chat together.I don't know how squirrels communicate.Showboating, I don't know if this isnecessarily a drag term, but I knowI got accused of showboating intomy season of RuPaul's drag race. And showboating is basicallygloating about your talents. You're someone who reallybelieves in their talentsand expresses them and has no qualm aboutand letting everyone knowthat you truly are that bitch.Beesh, in my opinion, most people say beesh.and you really draw it out longer. So it's like a, affectationof the word [beep]And it usually lives by itself, beesh, like that is that's the whole sentenceBoots, so I'll use it in a sentence first. You'll say girl thisoutfit is fierce boots. So in real life you would saythis outfit is very fierce, but in drag you would saythis outfit is fierce boots.Well, sometimes so someone will say like, girl that show was amazing, you could just say boots. And then you have likethe house down boots. Now the house down bootsis like very, very, very.like girl this show isfierce the house down boots. It's like in Spanish forsomething like [speaks spanish]or [speaks spanish], or [speaks Spanish]it's like the more you keepadding [speaks Spanish]It's like the bigger and bigger it gets. And that is what the house down boots is.I don't speak Spanish I just learned thatin Spanish class, in highschool, 20 years ago.Body-Ody-Ody.Now body-ody-ody is usually referred towhen a person has whatpeople would consider it,an hourglass figure, breast going out, hips going in, waist going inand the hips, coming out again.Honestly, they can be anyextreme version of anybody type.So if you're like slimand you're really slimthat's body-ody-ody.If you're muscular andyou're really muscularor really beefy, or really curvy. That's what body-ody-ody is.A Meaty tuck.So a meaty tuck is something that a lotof drag Queens maybe don't wannna go for.And some drag Queens do go for, tucking is the art formof taking your genitalsand pushing them back to createan illusion of not having a penis. That's usually what tucking is.And meaty tuck is when you don'texecute that incredibly well.So you would say, miss thingtonight I gotta meatytack don't don't pan down.Don't point the camera downthe tuck is meaty on this evening.Cooking and baking, now cooking andbaking refers to when you do your face, you will take powder andyou'll highlight this area, this, your T-zone, thisarea here, down here, and you leave it on whileyou're like preparinglike getting your outfit togetherand it punches up thehighlights in your makeup. So they'll be like, girl, why is your face coveredin powder, I'm baking.Drag daughter. Now a drag daughter is someonethat you teach drag to.A lot of times that isspecifically reserved forwhen you put someone indrag for their first time, there'll be your drag daughter. And a lot of other times it's more formal. You have to like basicallysubmit a request to besomeone's drag daughter.I have a lot of drag moms.My official drag mom is Peaches Christ. She didn't teach me drag. But she's taught me alot about producing andhow to be a business person in drag. But then again also Peppermint.Bebe Zahara Benet, Sherry Vine,Bianca Del Rio, all taught me a lot aboutdrag just through me, watchingthem and observing them. But I'm not officiallytheir drag daughter,I just learned a lot.Feeling the fantasy.I mean, to me, thisseems self explanatory, what feeling the fantasy is.So a big part of drag is a fantasy.Like I create this image of myself whereI am this extremely wealthyheiress to an, not heiress Iam the owner of the estate. She is feeling the fantasyit's gonna be one of those nights. So giving life is like, when you feel invigorated, because you saw a great performance, you saw a great picture. You saw a great discussion. You love someone's posts,it invigorated you, your life feels more full. That person is giving you life.So I'll be like, girl I saw it right now.I, when I first movedto New York city,I went down to Barracuda.I saw Peppermint onstage turning the partyand she was giving me life.Glamazon.So a glamazon is a big glamorous lady. Not doesn't have to be a lady, but that's kinda likethe connotation to it.Like a femma presentinglarger than life lady.Who's really glamorous. So it's a combination of glamorousand amazon and you combined them togetherand you say, well, she's the glamazon. She is a, you know, big fierce lady.Relying on body. This is a phrase that was madepopular by Michelle Visage.Stop relying on that body.Meaning you are using your, neck down physical attributesto compensate for a lack of performanceor some other, aspect of your career.Untuck.So untucking is the actof you remember talkingabout meat tucking earlier ?Y'all remember meaty tuck, untucking is the undoing of that.So at the end of the nightor in the middle of your gig, depending on how theseare going down there, you'll untuck and you'llfree the bird from the cage. The children. So this goes back to, givinglife, mom and children.Basically the children's audienceor the people receiving your art.So you say, Oh, miss thing she's gonnagive her children life tonight. She's gonna do a goodjob for the audience. It's so funny cause like tome these are all secondary.Like I'm just so usedto saying oh miss thingshe's hurting for the children.Like she's out there giving, doing a really good jobso that your children, so theaudience can enjoy themselves. She owns everything. And this is a phrase from Junior, who is,one of the most iconic peoplein the history of ballroom. This is from Paris is Burning says someof the most iconic linesin queer history ever. For example, have you ever heardthe word, the term opulence? You own everything!O-P-U-L-E-N-C-E opulence. It is referring to someonelike when they look rich, when they look fierce and it's like, bear in mind the room we're inthat person owns everything in this door.Escandalo.Escandalo is a Spanish word. And it's like, girl that was scandalous.I mean, I think it was prettyseems pretty self explanatory.A drag King is somewhat. So let's talk about, let's break it downto drag and then dragQueens and then drag Kings.Shall we let's break it all down.Drag is blurring the genderline and creating art.It doesn't have to besinging and it doesn't haveto be dancing, it doesn'thave to be comedy. If you are blurring the gender lineand you're creating art, you're then engaging in drag.So for example, if a Cis gendered womanis doing is dressing up high drag, what she's doing isessentially dressing upas a hyper woman, or a hyper femme,or dressing up like a mandoing dressing like a woman. Therefore you areblurring the gender line.So in order to be a drag Queen, you don't have to beassigned male at birth. You don't have to be a man.You don't have to, youcan just doing drag.In order to be a drag King, you're doing the version, but it's more skewed towards masculinity. So if someone's doing a hypermasculine performance of masculinity, that person is a drag King.More often than not drag Queensare usually a FAB, meaningassigned female at birth. All right listen, that's the full fantasy. That's the diction. And that isn't that?Oh yeah [beep] Mary Webster. This is Bob, the drag Queenon a bridge full dictionary, honey. So if you learned something.
