Zinc recycling plant developers hold public meeting

Cass County residents were able to have their concerns heard about a proposed zinc recycling plant that would be built outside of Logansport.

Discuss a proposed zinc recyling plant in cass county.

The plant has been a topic oconcern for many residents due to possible health hazards.

As news 18's balint szalavari reports, residents are hoping to have their questions answered.

Gutierrez: "this should've been a long time ago."

Developers from waelz (wells) sustainable products are hosting a public meeting this evening to discuss their plans to build a zinc recycling plant in cass county.

And residents like maximo gutierrez are planning to voice their concerns.

Gutierrez: "i've been trying to talk to them about the noise, about how much dust there was in the last couple of weeks.

And all of this was blowing into my house.

And they say they're not going to stop."

The plant would be built in the agribusiness park just west of logansport.

Other residents like lora redweik (redwick) want to know about the health hazards such a plant could bring.

Redweik: "we have a lot of concerns with the emissions and what it's going to do to, you know, to property values, to health."

Redweik says she's also worried about what the plant would mean for the county.

Redweik: "are people going to stay around?

Are they going to leave?

You know, what's going to happen to our communities?"

This is the first time the public will be able to meet developers like ali alavi in person to discuss the plant.

He says they hope to answer as many questions as possible.

Alavi: alavi: "this is an opportunity for people to get the story right from the source."

Alavi says developers have been wanting to hold a public meeting for a while, but have been limited due to covid-19 related restrictions.

Alavi: "we had two virtual town halls several weeks ago.

Now that things have opened up a little bit, it's given us a little bit more flexibility."

The meeting is taking place at the cass county 4-h fairgrounds.
