Thailand backpacker attraction 'Khaosan Road' renovations complete

Renovation work on tourist hotspot Khaosan Road in Bangkok, Thailand, was completed this month - but it will remain closed to tourists due to the pandemic.

Officials began a vast restructuring of the street - one of the most well-known backpacker destinations in the world - earlier this year.

The finished area now has pavements that have been merged into the road with smooth grey slabs covering the whole area.

Removable steel bollards are also in place along the length of the road.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) deputy governor Sakonthee Pattiyakul said the Khaosan, or Khao San Road, cleanup project was aimed at improving the image of tourism.

The changes will also make it easier to organise the sprawling mass of street sellers and vendors, while keeping out illegal touts.

Officials said that traders on the famous street would be allowed to re-pen once the Covid-19 pandemic is contained within the country - expected to be in July or August.

Thailand has been slowly easing coronavirus lockdown measures, with no local transmissions for more than two weeks.

Businesses that have been allowed to re-open are operating under strict guidelines to limit the risks of spreading the pandemic.
