WHO Pauses Hydroxychloroquine Medical Trials for COVID-19 The move comes after a report linked the drug to an increased fatality rate among those with coronavirus.

The study in medical journal 'The Lancet' adds that it can increase odds of heart failure in coronavirus patients.

The decision has been confirmed by World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan adds that more research on hydroxychloroquine is needed.

Soumya Swaminathan Further trials conducted in the U.S. and France claim hydroxychloroquine won't help battle the pandemic.

Hydroxychloroquine can help treat malaria and lupus, but its effectiveness against COVID-19 remains unknown.

President Donald Trump has often claimed that hydroxychloroquine is useful against the coronavirus.

Trump even recently said that he was personally taking the drug as a precaution.
