Baptist Health Will Build Medical Campus in Hamburg Area

It's a plan 20 years in the making.

Abc 36's austin miller explains how it will help not just the city...but also the rest of central and eastern kentucky.

### it may be a field now..

But soon..

Polo club boulevard will be the site for a second baptist health.

William sisson, trt- 04 "this whole complex is going to be of the future."

The billion-dollar project calls for a multi-story hospital..

And 12 additional buildings for retail..

Medical office space..

And parking.

The location right off the interstate will be easier for eastern kentucky patients to get to.

Plus as part of the deal...baptist donated three acres of land on site for a new fire station.

Linda gorton, trt- 10 "we are looked upon in the whole region as a healthcare hub, so this is a real win for the healthcare sector here."

William sisson, trt- 06 "this is my dream.

This kind of finishes my dream for baptist hospital here in lexington."

A dream for two decades... was delayed to focus on expanding the downtown hospital first.

This new campus will focus primarily on outpatient procedures.

Baptist health lexington president william sisson says he doesn't know yet how many patients it'll accomodate...but because of the pandemic..the hospital's looking into ways to maximize bed capacity.

William sisson, trt- 10 "we don't want to have to build a nutter center.

We shouldn't have to do that.

We need to make sure our hospitals have the ability to add beds and be able to take care of those patients long-term."

Construction on the project was supposed to start this fall..

But because of the pandemic..

Sissons says the new timeline is late spring of 2021.

William sisson, trt- 05 "we just hope that we can get started as quickly as we can, but it all kind of depends on things we don't have control over."

In lexington..
