The most destructive wildfire in our area's history -- survivors say the ridge is coming back stronger than ever -- christina vitale shows us how the local fire department has upgraded it's ability to handle any future wildfire threats.

18 months since the camp fire and town leaders are still working every day towards the longterm recovery messina: the rebuild and the regrowth of the town has met all of our expectations and superseded them in some aspects paradise fire chief john messina says they've changed their approach to the public with fire safe education.

Messina: one of the biggest changes we are now messaging out is it doesn't matter if you've received an evacuation order or not if you feel threatened you should immediately evacuate a group is working towards a new evacuation plan for butte county communities.

Messina: we were hoping to get them already but the coronavirus put slowed down the progress of producing those some of the changes won't be obvious to the public.

Messina: we were able to sit down and go through the plan and say this didn't make sense to the public this happened this didn't and we were able to mold the plan chris smith camp fire survivor: they can plan they can think they can get resources they can have reactions ready but at the end of the day people need to be able to react for themselves.

Messina sayã not much has changed in how they prepare for wildfire seasonã it's up to the people to pay attention to the education they're providing.

Standup: chief messina says his biggest concern is seeing lots just like these all around town over grown with brush and grass and unmanaged by property owners messina: the responsibility and the expectation that of the town is that you will still maintain that property when it comes to fire safety and we're going to enforce that whether you live in chico nebraska southern california messina tells me he's seeing people being more aware since the camp fire.

Messina: the ones remaining in paradise and the ones that want to move back are doing exactly what we want them to make paradise fire safe but when it comes to preparationãhe says there's no better advertisement about a threat than a wildfire itself & in paradise christina vitale action news now coverage you can count on.

Chief messina says a designated group is working to implement an early warning system for evacuationsã once the plan is designed organizers will seek funding.
