Social Security recipients must file 'simple tax return' for stimulus checks

Those who don't typically file tax returns must complete a 'simple' return in order to receive stimulus checks, while some will not be receiving checks at all.

It won't be long before stimulus checks start going out... as part of washington's 2 trillion dollar stimulus package.

Individuals can expect direct deposits or checks as large as 12 hundred dollars.

And twice that amount for couples.

But as kezi 9 news reporter chris lueneburg shows us, some people may need to file some extra paperwork.

"it'll be like a big chunk of payment."

Everybody seems to know what they would do with 12 hundred dollars.

"just helping with paying rent or groceries..."

"paying some bills and trying to stay ahead."

"we usually owe tax at the end of the year so i'll probably put that towards my payment."

But the money comes to some easier than others.

"i'm probably not going to get one even though i could really use one as a college student."

University of oregon junior ryan harmon is among the students who won't be getting a stimulus check.

Students who were claimed as dependents on their family's last tax return are out of luck.

But harmon says students are at financial risk... with service jobs and new careers on the line.

"i know a couple of people who have lost their jobs that worked on campus and its tough for everyone for sure."

But those who don't usually file returns-- like social security recipients and low-income taxpayers, --will now need to file a simplified version... "the simple tax form will include questions about filing status, dependents, direct deposit info and possibly more.

Instructions are supposed to go up on irs dot gov slash coronavirus soon, but we're still waiting on the details."

Stimulus dollars could start rolling out as soon as three weeks from now-- but one retiree we spoke to hopes most of it gets into the hands of those who need it most.

"we probably would be better to have our check sent to one of the people in yachats, i live there, who have lost their jobs."

An infusion of cash that not all can count on.
