Decrease in arrests, increase in drug use

A look at the county crime rates: A decrease in arrests and an increase in drug use.

Decrease in arrests, increase in drug use

While vigo county is seeing a decrease in overall arrests..

There "is" an uptick in arrests from drug use.

Meth has continued to be the drug of choice throughout the community.

News 10's jordan kudisch joins us live this morning from the vigo county security center.

She sat down with sheriff john plasse to get an overall look at crime rates... and why the drug increase has caused concerns.

What i've learned..

Is that 90 percent of those inmates in this jail behind me..

Are in there because of drug use.

And not for drugs like marijuanna..

But meth and heroin.

Let's take a deeper dive in the numbers.

Sheriff plasse broke down some of the numbers for me.

He says there were at least "200" less arrests this past year.

You can see that on your screen.

17-98 arrests in 20-18..

And 15-85 arrests in 20-19.

These numbers include numbers these numbers include felonies and misdemeanors..

Not traffic arrests.

While there was one this year..

In the past two years there have been zero homicides.

Plasse says while hes happy to see a decrease in arrests..

The drug issue is something they're trying to take hold of.

"we're the meth lab capital of the state the importation of drugs from mexico by the mail, by carrier, it's getting here in carrier, it's getting here in record numbers and we will do whatever we can to stop that inflow."

In the next 30 minutes..

Reporting live from the security center, jordan kudisch, news 10.
