14 someone broke into a dorm room and stole a laptop, eventually ditching it in a nearby creek.

Some chico state students say a recent dorm break in has them concerned for their safety.

The university police department says unfortunately- they deal with theft on a regular basis but they have new tools they're using to help catch the suspects.

Friday night someone broke into a dorm room and grabbed an eleven hundred dollar laptop and took offã eventually ditching the laptop in a nearby creek..

Chico state police quickly caught the suspect and say he is not a student.

One student i spoke with says she used to live at the dorms..

"it makes me anxious and uncomfortable to think of someone in someone elses dorm room without their permission" "we have patrols we do and foot patrols and in vehicles we have video surveillance and staff working at dorms, so we have systems in place to keep this type of thing from happening."

University police officials say they are still trying to figure out*ho* the man got into the dorm.

They also have a new anonymous tip reportign tool where you can text chico state to 847-411 or download the my chico state app and click report crime.

All the tips are received by authorized personnel in real time.

Commander necodemus adds they were able to quickly catch the suspect because of tips they received.
