How Dwayne Haskins Spent His First $1M in the NFL

- Whose money is this?I just got here, it's not mine.

[chuckles][upbeat music]What's up, GQ?It's Dwayne Haskins, and this is how I spent my first million. As a kid I always saidI was gonna play in the NFL,and everybody thought I was crazy. When you playing, andplay college football, especially if you'repretty good at what you do,you wanna play in the NFL.So, of course throughout the seasoneveryone was like,"Man, what you finna buy?"If I got this, I would getthis, I would get that."And I'm like, "Man, I gottafocus on getting there first."I gotta play well, so.With all the working,I knew I was gonna be able to do itwith hard work and perseverance, and I made it.I never really had a job growing up.I might have worked likesome football camps,if that counts,it was like a summer campor something like that. But I never had to workor clock in nine to five.None of that.- [Interviewer] So ifwe look at your resume, first job ever is NFL quarterback.- That's pretty cool, right?

[laughs]Yeah, that would be my first real job. When I got drafted I was actually at homeat a bowling alley in Maryland, and I went to high school in the area. And the owner's son actuallygoes to my high school. So, it's crazy, I alwaysused to go to Redskingames growing up.Just to be able to bedrafted by the hometown teamand knowing I'll be ableto take care of myself, and not have to worryabout making ends meet.Being in school I didn't have any debt,so, everything was alreadypaid for, my apartment. The only thing I had to payfor in college was my car bill.Might have had like maybe acouple of bills for the librarybut I had to pay that off.[chuckles]- [Interviewer] Overdue books.- Yeah, that's about it.[chill music]The first thing I asked my agent like,"I'm drafting now so when do I get paid?"When I got my first signing bonusI put about 70% of it away.30% of it I put it in a different account. And I bought some stuff as wellso we'll get into that too.

[chuckles]So before we talk about my first million,it's very important thatyou save your money. But now that I made the money,I'm like bro, there's taxes,so like I'm thinking I'm gettingall this money and halfof it is going to taxes. You got your agent fees, you got all this stuff you gotta pay for.I have financial advisor, so.Talking about finances, savings, having them indifferent buckets, he calls it.As far as spending money, having saving money, having money put away for long term.I have like three different bank accounts.Make sure you be smart with your moneybecause at the end of theday you don't make that moneyeveryday the rest your of life. The first thing I boughtafter I saved my money, make sure you save your chicken.I got myself a carand my mom a house.I got myself a Bentley Bentayga. It's a very nice car.Got it custom matte black, red interior. It's my baby, called thebat mobile, my favorite car.And you can see that car right here. And the interior right here.

[laughs]That car, $250,000.[laughs]I'm not buying no more cars. Not a very great investment to buy a caras they depreciate with value. If you wanna buy a car, make sure you're comfortablewith what you buying.- [Interviewer)] What wasyour mom's reaction like? And how did you give her the house?- I guess it was like the mortgage papers. She has to sign on it too'cause of course she's living there.Being able to just, "Hey,mom, got a surprise for you."Here's a house."But she was so excited and being ableto move to somewhere wereshe would be comfortable.Gave me a really big hug.And definitely made those 14 plus yearsof hard work worth it.Always wanted my mom ahouse, that's like somethinga lot of athletes wanna do for their mom.You know, my mom sacrificeda lot for me growing up.And being able to take care of heris something that wasreally important for me.- [Interviewer] How much was the housethat you bought your mom?- There's not enough on the table. That would be the rest ofall this money, so 750.My mom's house was 750,000but that wasn't spent for me.So I'm not gonna count that.I always wanted to go out the country.I have not gone yet.Declaring from the draftright from college, this training and then hoppingright into the NFL season, there's like literallyno time to go anywhere.I'm going to Bahamas soon.Trip coming up next month.I like to shop smart. So I got the flights in advance. So they weren't more than like $800and then hotel was like3,000 for a couple days.- [Interviewer] So let'sbudget 10,000 for the vacation?- Yeah.Maybe like five or seven, around there.Finance guy's watching soI'm being smart and stuff.10 bands, vacation money.♩ Woo ♩I bought some jewelry.I got some on rightnow, shout out to gave.I always rock earrings.I didn't get my ears piercedtill I was like in junior high school.Me and my dad got our earspierced together, actually. So it was pretty ironic.I got me one or two watches.Something I got on right now.Patek Philippe.I bought it bust down already. This is like a chandelier. This watch could be worth over 100,000.I did not pay that muchfor this watch though.I gotta pull up my receipts.Say like 60K for the Patek.- [Interviewer] What about the chain? How much was the chain?[exhales]Another 10.Chain.You gotta be drippy. So I got a couple of nice clothes. My dad always says I getmy fashion sense from him.He used to model and allthat stuff like that. So, I always kinda knew how to dress,I just didn't have the moneyto buy the expensive things. So of course, when I got to the league,I was training in LA,so Rodeo Drive is like oneof those places you hear.Met a whole bunch offashion people out here.I mean I got a personal shopper now.And I don't go to the mall anymore.Having somebody I couldjust text, and like,"I wanna get this shirt."I saw this shirt here andbe able to buy it for me.Shout out to Joey Dubs.I gotta buy suits, suits was something I hadto buy for this seasonbeing a quarterback.Bought like four or five suits.Tailor made, 10.If I had to say clothesand everything like that, first year, like 40,000.In there. If I had to take myselfout of the best stylefor the Washington Redskins,I give Landon, LandonCollins, he's up there. My man, Jimmy Moreland, is up there.Steven Sims.Dunny, Q.

Dunny's up there. And Cro.And I mean, Rodgers-Cromartieis like my top five for drip on the team.I got a funny story. So, I'm training in LA,I'm working out with DeshaunWatson and a few other friendslike DeShone Kizer and Manny Wilkins, and with my quarterbackcoach, Quincy Avery. And we're playing a game. And we're like whoever loseshas to buy dinner tonight. So unfortunately, I lose, right. We go to some restaurantand they run the tab up on me crazy.First of all, it's supposedto be just us four. They invited friends, family, cousins. It was like almost 15,20 people at the table.I'm like, "There's no way I'mpaying for all this food."It was like almost $10,000.I was pissed. So, I never bet with them no more.Oh, okay.Another thing happened.Rookie dinner, it's likea real thing in the NFL.Offered to lineman andtook them out to eat,and of course they orderedall the appetizers, all the steaks they can get. They do not want to go out to Applebees. They wanna go the best steakplace that they can find. That was a expensive bill too. That's something you wannado, take care of your lineman. They block for you, take careof you, keep you off dirt. You know, I'll do it again if I have to.Shout out to Corey.I have a whole bunch of like murals, and motivational things,I got a white room.I have like five, six different paintings.Muhammad Ali, MichaelJordan, Michael Jackson.I just got a Kobe mural.I got a whole poker tableof my favorite rappers with "Scarface."It's like Jay-Z, Nipsey,J.

Cole, Biggie, Tupac. It's a dope piece. He didn't charge me that much.So I probably say another 10.A quarter to paint my basement.Being in the NFL, of coursewe have family membersthat you wanna look after.Couple friends that you grew up with.Biggest thing I learned is how to say no.'Cause people will askfor a lot if you let them.I take care of my sister,I helped her go to school. You know, stuff like that, something that I felt like was importantfor somebody to moveforward with their life,I'll help them with. She got a scholarship to SCAD.Savannah College of Art Design. She is a actress and she ismajoring in communications. She wants to produce movies, make movies, be in movies. My dad always says she'smore talented than meat what she does than what I do.But, that's up for debate.Hand me 50.The green money stack.Going to my sister.- [Interviewer] If you havean away game in New York,do you get taxed fromthe state of New York?- I tried to tell youtaxes are no joke, bro.So you'll get tax where you play. You get taxed when youplay at your home stadium. So, if you play in LA,you're getting LA taxes. If you play in New York, you're paying New York taxes. For that game that you're playing. It's ridiculous but [chuckles],yeah, it is what it is.Let's push all this money in for taxes.Ouch! It hurts. This is all taxes. Here's my first million. That felt pretty good.Something I always dreamed of as a kid.Car, and watch, and getmy mom a house and stuff. But it goes pretty fast. You think you got everything in the worldonce you get drafted, andthen you look at your check, and like it's a lot of money, but it can go if you don'tspend it the right way. That's it, guys, that's howI spent my first million.Catch me at FedExField next year.Go Skins, ATTR.I'm out, later.
