Two forest workers had a scary experience while tracking a wild elephant in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu after it smashed one of their motorcycles.

The two men kept close to the elephant, which had strayed near villages in the Virajpet area, Coorg district on January 11.

The forest officials had parked their bikes on the roadside at Abbur village and were waiting for the elephant to go back to the forest on its own as it had done earlier.

However, it then charged their vehicles and smashed one of them out of the way, dragging it with its trunk for a few metres.

An official of Karnataka forest department said the elephant seemed to have become aggressive and would be kept under close watch.
