Chaotic scenes as Filipino Catholics scramble to touch Black Nazarene Jesus Christ statute

Religious devotees in the Philippines take part in the feast of the Black Nazarene amid injuries and clashes with authorities on Friday (January 10).

The event amassed an estimated of 3.3 million Catholics from all over the country while the main procession of the Black Nazarene lasted for 16 hours.

Followers believe that touching the scared statue of Jesus as it passes through the streets will bring miracles.

In chaotic scenes, more than 250 people were reportedly injured, said the Manila Public Information office.

Some of the recorded injuries include hypertension, fracture, dislocation, fainting and loss of consciousness.

The Philippines, with its 100 million population, is comprised of mainly Catholics.

On January 9 of each year, devotees of the Black Nazarene walk through the streets of Manila for the "traslacion" ritual.
