UK parliament Speaker Hoyle re-elected

British lawmakers re-elected Labour's Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker on Tuesday who vowed to be impartial and fair in a moderating role which saw his predecessor John Bercow accused of breaking convention to help opponents of Brexit.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FATHER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, PETER BOTTOMLEY, SAYING: "The question is that Lindsay Hoyle do take the chair of this House as speaker.

As many as of that opinion say 'aye' (LAWMAKERS SHOUT 'Aye').

Of the contrary, 'no' (LAWMAKERS REMAIN SILENT).

The ayes have it, the ayes have it." British lawmakers re-elected Labour's Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker of the House of Commons on Tuesday (December 17).

Who vowed impartiality and fairness in the moderating role.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE OF COMMONS SPEAKER-ELECT, LINDSAY HOYLE, SAYING: "I swear by almighty God that I will be faithful to bear true allegiance to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors according to law so help me god." His predecessor John Bercow was accused of breaking convention to help opponents of Brexit.

62-year-old Hoyle was first elected in November.

Just before parliament was dissolved for the general election campaign.

His re-election was uncontested.
