"news 10" continues to follow concerns "about the terre haute fire department's" "budget".

It's a story that we've been following for you..

Since last night's "terre haute city council meeting".

That's where we learned..

"the department" was asking "f more money" to cover excessive overtime.

As news 10's "rondrell moore" explains... we sat down earlier today "with fire chief jeff fisher".

He goes into detail..

As to why "the department" has gone "700"-thousand-dollars "over budget" for overtime.

//////// //////// 1 point 2 million dollars.

That's the amount of overtime from the fire department to this point.

Chief jeff fisher says circumstances this year made it inevitable.

Last night... fisher went before the council.

The department had a budget of 518 thousand dollars for the overtime this year.

Fisher explained several things pushed them passed that amount.

He says several people retired, and others had medical issues that kept them from working.

Because of this, he says his staff had to work overtime to fill in the gaps.

He says the solution to this issue moving forward would be to hire more staff.

Either way, he says he doesn't want to risk the community's safety by cutting positions.

////// 18:02:11,00 "we have to fill our firehouses... we have to fill our fire apparatus... in order to make emergency runs and to take care the community of terre haute that's the bottom line."

//////// council members said last night, they would like to check in regularly with the fire department to monitor finances.
