Holiday cheer was overflowing earlier this evenign at the state capitol in sacramento.

Three... two... one... cheers ---- ---- our state christmas tree is aglow tonight following a lighting ceremony.

The lighting is an annual tradition dating back to the 1930s.

This year's program included musical performances that highlited california's cultural diversity, native heritage and spirit of inclusion..

One of those groups performing at tonight's tree lighting was the paradise strong chorus from paradise ridge elementary.

Then a hero comes along with the strength to carry on.

And you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive.

So when you feel like hope is gone look inside you and be strong.

After their performance, governor gavin newsom praised the children and the town for its "remarkable resilience"... and noted how far the community had come in the past year.

To see all those kids up here on this stage, that's the definition of pride, that's the definition of spirit, that is what we should all be celebrating.

That's what the holidays are about.

This year's tree is a 66 foot tall white fir from the la tour demonstration state forest
