Basel ready for next chapter after stepping down as Poland girls soccer coach

Announcing he is stepping down.

Good evening!

In our area - especially in the smaller districts -i school sports team entire town together.

That's the case in poland where the long-time girls soccer coach is looking forward to the next chapter of his life after bringinpeoe together for more than twenty years.nats: cheeri... tom basel: this s a passion project, this one of the loves f my life, one of the greatest experiences of my life without question.

Tom basel has been the head coach of the poland girls varsity soccer team for the past 23 years.

He's won eight section three titles and two state titles - but now - he says it's time to step away.

Tom basel: kinof ached thapointe done what you feel you set out to tom basel: kind of rcd that poie done what you feel you set out to , you accomplished what you wanted to accomplish.

Our daughter is moving on tocollegei would like to be an active parent that part of her life and we also have a son and i'd like to have that time and freedom to spend that time with him and his final years of high school after building a progm to a perennial powerhouse - basel is ready to enjoy a different side of the game - watching his daughter leah and other former players in college next year.

With that - i wonderedf it'be d switch from coach to spectator mode when hedoes.

Tom basel: i think it's going to be easier for me to step ck ankind ofe a silent parents but wanting to have my wife by my side so i can share my thoughts with her but that will be fun to find out.

Speaking of leah - she's played for her father on varsity for five years - but has been coached by him for her entire life.

She spoke out watchino see o step back from something he s donsince before e s born.leah baseli'm really hapr him he's been ing it for along me before i live in poland to he's always been at poland soccer and it's been my entire life so to see him step down for my senior year i'm happy for him.

Every high school coach or athlete dreams about winning a state title- butth fa got to do it together.

We watched back on that dream becoming a reality.

Spencer vidson: i have a shot coming up of you guys and breezy and hugging what's that moment like?

Leah basel:it's a really special moment for a father daughter and coach anyways but it just madeit seem worthwhile all the time we put in, it was the moment we've be wahing.

Tom sel: a lot of car rides to practices, a lot of indoor, a lot of tournames.

So yeah that's what i'm thinking of when i give her that hug and hold on an extra second it's just to hold onto that moment because we earned it sharing that moment with his daughter was very gratifying for coach basel.

The bond he formed with all his players - as well as - the scol adnistration and community as a whole made this journey what it stom basel looking in it's easy for people to see all the number of championships for the week total for the what have you but for me it's the relationships that i've established in the years here.

As he looks toward t next chapter of his life - basel hopes the legacy he heed to build he at poland wl be a lasting one.

Tom basel: we wanted to get the program ta point where it was bigger than any particular player.

We've had se wonderful players and some star players that have come through here over the years who have scored goals and got an assist and have gone on to college.

Our program has survive and flourish witho ani'd like to think that i was i'm leaving that we built the program uso that it's bigger than a retirement coach and that it will just continue on with whoever decides to take the position.

Reflecting on 27 years as a head coach and 23 with one
