Wednesday the lafayette parish sheriff's office is urging the public to be on alert this holiday season.

According to the lpso facebook page, scammers spoofing calls to appear to be a law enforcement telephone number.the scammers then threatens the caller to pay unpaid taxes.

However, they ask for the payment via gift cards or credit card over the phone.law enforcement reminds the public they will never ask for payment over the phone, nor would they ask that with gift cards.

3 governor john bel edwards declared a state of emergency in response to a cyber attack on monday against state government computers.the declaration... will allow affected agencies to waive fees and fines the public could be hit with...because some agencies ... notably the office of motor vehicles ... have been closed.the attempted ransomware attack caused the shutdown of state servers monday, upending online services across state agencies.

Most operations are back up and running, but the cyberattack caused larger problems at the office of motor vehicles.louisiana's technology services office continues its work to restore the o-m-v network and online services.edwards said thursday the ransomware attack was "largely unsuccessful" didn't lose its data and didn't pay a ransom.
