Former UK consulate employee says Chinese secret police tortured him

The former employee of Britain's Hong Kong consulate arrested on a trip to mainland China has claimed Chinese secret police beat and chained him, and deprived him of sleep.

That as they pressed him for information on activists leading Hong Kong's anti-government protests.

Simon Cheng, who is a Hong Kong citizen and worked for the UK government for almost two years, was detained for 15 days.

Charged with soliciting prostitution.

He told the BBC he was - quote - "shackled, blindfolded and hooded." In another interview with the Wall Street Journal, Cheng said he was questioned repeatedly about the role his interrogators presumed Britain held in encouraging the unrest.

Out of fear, he said he provided passwords for his phone and social media accounts.

And named two British consular officials he believed to have military and intelligence backgrounds.

Cheng also gave details about some involved in the protests.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has condemned China's alleged treatment of Cheng.

Which he said "amounts to torture." He has now summoned the Chinese ambassador.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman defended the treatment of Cheng on Wednesday (November 20).

And said - quote - that "China would firmly oppose relevant remarks from the British side," adding, China expressed "great indignation towards the UK's recent series of mistaken remarks and actions"
