Class of 2017 showcases diverse sports scene in SW MO

Springfield Area Sports HOF 2017

Dan the springfield area sports hall of fame inducted his class of 20-17 tonight at the oasis convention center.

The five person class shows the diversity of sports here in springfield.

Mary phyl dwight was a five sport athlete at missouri state from 1970-74 and was an olympian in team handball in 1984.

The late sean swanson was one of springfield's premiere pro bowlers.

Amanda newton plotner was a three sport athlete at republic high school, then a three-time all-american basketball player at drury.

George wilson coached high school boys basketball for 31 years, then the college of the ozarks womens team for 16 more.

And lyndal scranton, who covered all these inductees as a sports writer for the news leader for 36 years.

Lyndal scranton/class of 2017:"the only reason that i have any accomplishments at all is what these people did.

People who are being inducted tonight along with me.

And many others that have gone before in this hall of fame.

They're the ones, i've just told their stories."

Amanda newton/class of 2017:"it's pretty overwhelming honestly.

It's very humbling and such an honor to be a part.

If you look at the list of people, i think i don't belong here.

It's very humbling and it makes my heart happy."

George wilson/class of 2017:"i grew up around springfield but never did work here.

But i did work in the towns surrounding here.

To me it's a big honor."

Mary phyl dwight/class of 2017:"i just had an opportunities.

When i went to sms i was just passionate about sports.

I had not been able to play in high school because at that time there were not organized sports for girls.
