Chattanooga and North Shore are running out of water after Tennessee American suffers a water main break.

Thousands of people in the tennessee valley are without water at this hour after a water main break late yesterday.... crews are working at this hour to try to stop the massive amount of water coming from this break.... news 12 now's ashley henderson joins us live from the tennam headquarters on amnicola...where the repairs are taking place at this hour.... ashley what can you tell us??

Kay...the chattanooga downtown area is coming to terms with the fact that there is no water service there.

That, of course, includes schools...that are all closed now.....but also businesses including the aquarium.

But...here's how it all started.

10 pm last night - during work on a planned project at the main plant - a break occurred in a 36 inch a break occurred in the 36 inch line in the 1960s era pipe where work was being done about 35 about 35,000 people in the downtown and north shore areas might be affect.

This could be a multi-day event customers will experience low or no pressureel4 hours.

"what we're doing right now is we're closing a number of valves, and we've actually got, the pressure coming out of our plant has actually gone up - we've closed some valves, that'll help restore water towards our downtown areas, uh, like i said before 36 is one of the largest pipes that we have out in our system so it obviously supplies a lot of water so it's very critical."

They're asking people to be in a self conservation mode until this problem can be repaired.

All tennessee american water crews are working to restore water as quickly as possible.

Let's take a look a the areas impacted by the water main break.... tennessee american water issued a code red notification earlier this morning alerting customers in the affected areas.... the impact stretches from rossville to red bank....and lookout valley..... again over thrity thousand people are affected in this area... we have also learned from the water company thats customers on lookout mountain will experience low to no water pressure at all.

The area affected includes business....gover nment offices and schools... however, lookout mountain, tennessee mayor walker jones, tells us right now they are doing o-k, and he hasn't been notified about losing water pressure.

Jones says they have a water tank, so that's keeping things going, and it's business as usual.

Hamilton county schools is following their early release schedule that was in place the wednesday after labor day.

They felt like that release went smoothly.

I talked to tim hensley and he said that when they were first notified about the water main break it was not going to affect the whole county.

Students that are still in school will receive lunches.

Tim says that all parents have been notified of the early releases.

They are unsure on the number of schools that are affected.

But the ones that are have no water at all we have gotten word that utc is closed as well.
