Health Talk - Food Safety #2

With football season pretty much here, you might be planning to tailgate.

We learn how to handle food the right way on the road, in our health talk with baptist.

Hi.

I'm libby walker, the morrison director of food and nutrition services at baptist memorial hospital golden triangle.

Tonight i want to talk to you about how to handle food safely while on the road.

Whether it's a quick trip to the park for a family picnic, tailgating at your favorite game or taking a favorite recipe to a family reunion, the 'road' to food safety can either be bumpy or smooth - depending on what precautions we take in handling meals as we travel.

There are some simple, common sense food safety rules that can save a special occasion from a disaster.

?

Plan ahead - if you are traveling with perishable food, place it in a cooler with ice or freezer packs.

Place drinks in a separate cooler so the food cooler is not opened frequently.

?

Pack safely - pack perishable foods directly from the refrigerator or freezer into the cooler.

Meat and poultry may be packed while still frozen so it stays colder longer.

Be sure to keep raw meat and poultry wrapped separately from cooked foods or foods meant to be eaten raw such as fruits.

?

When camping, keep the cooler in a shady spot and covered with a light colored blanket or tarp to reflect heat.

?

Keep drinks in a separate cooler from foods.

?

Hot take-out foods should be consumed within two hours of purchase.
