Jimmy Carter Suggests Trump Is an Illegitimate President: Full Investigation Would Show He 'Didn't Actually' Win Election

Former President Jimmy Carter recently said that an investigation “would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016…He was put into office because the Russians interfered.” Former President Jimmy Carter recently said that an investigation "would show that President Trump didn't actually win the election in 2016…He was put into office because the Russians interfered."  Carter made that comment during a conference on human rights held at the Carter Center.

Susan Page of USA Today reports that, in regard to whether he meant that Trump is, in fact, an illegitimate president, Carter commented: "Based on what I said, which I can't retract." Russia's interference in the 2016 election is something that Trump has joked about.

For instance, at the ongoing G-20 summit in Japan, Trump responded to a question about discussing meddling with Russian President Vladimir Putin by pointing to the leader and saying: "Don't meddle in the election, president.

Don't meddle in the election."  Notably, while Robert Mueller's report does conclude that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election and offer examples of Trump campaign team members interacting with Russian officials, it does not question the election's outcome.
