Father of missing backpacker pleads for help in Australia

At a press conference in Australia, the father of missing teenager Theo Hayez asks for help after his son disappeared more than two weeks ago.

He was backpacking in the country and was last seen in Byron Bay, a coastal town north of Sydney.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FATHER OF MISSING BACKPACKER THEO HAYEZ, LAURENT HAYEZ, SAYING: "When I left Belgium I promised Theo's little brother, Lucas, that I would bring his brother home." An emotional call for help, by the father of a missing Belgian teenager who disappeared while backpacking in Australia more than two weeks ago.

Theo Hayez was last seen leaving a bar in Byron Bay, a holiday town north of Sydney on May 31st.

Police were alerted on June 6th after Hayez failed to check out of his hostel and was nowhere to be found.

Hayez had been backpacking in the country since November.

According to reports, he was supposed to return home to Belgium last week.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLICE DISTRICT COMMANDER OF THE TWEED BYRON COMMAND, SUPERINTENDENT DAVE ROPTELL, SAYING: "It would be out of character for him to be missing.

It appears to be out of character.

But - and he was intending to go home.

And, you know, it's just - as I said, it's baffling as to what's occurred.

Police are now looking for access to Hayez's Whatsapp messages, asking anyone who was in a group chat with Hayez for help, and even lodging a request with Whatsapp owner Facebook.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FATHER OF MISSING BACKPACKER THEO HAYEZ, LAURENT HAYEZ, SAYING: "This is a question of providing assistance to a person in grave danger.

It is vital that investigators get access to Theo's WhatsApp account without delay.

Every minute counts." Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
