'Our presence has been consistent over decades' says U.S. Navy on South China Sea

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION The head of operations of the United States Navy, Admiral John Michael Richardson said at a maritime defense conference in Singapore on Wednesday (May 15) that US naval operations has been consistent over decades and has not risen recently.

Two US navy warships sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on Monday (May 6) last week, a move that angered Beijing at a time of tense ties between the world's two biggest economies.

The U.S. Navy says it conducts such freedom of navigation operations in international waters around the world, even in seas claimed by its allies, without political considerations.

China claims almost all of the strategic South China Sea with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam pushing competing claims to parts of the maritime region.

The United States, Japan and India do not have any territorial claims there.
