White House Denies Request for Trump-Putin Documents

Tensions between the Trump administration and House Democrats continued to escalate Thursday as the White House denied requests for documents related to communications between President Trump and Vladimir Putin.

In a letter addressed to House committee chairmen Adam Schiff, Elijah Cummings and Eliot Engel, White House counsel Pat Cipollone said the president's communications with foreign leaders are protected by executive privilege.

He wrote, "Congress cannot require the President to disclose his confidential communications with foreign leaders." House Democrats originally asked White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney for documents concerning President Trump and Putin's communications in early March.

Their letter followed reports that the president may have destroyed or intentionally withheld records of his conversations with the Russian leader.

According to Politico, Schiff and Engel have been in touch with House General Counsel Douglas Letter about their options for legally compelling the White House to share the documents they've asked for.

They're reportedly still considering a subpoena.
