Grime star Stormzy announced as Glastonbury's first headline act

British grime star Stormzy has been confirmed as the first headline act at Glastonbury next year.

And, while the famously muddy festival is best known for its performances by rock and pop stars, it's not the first time an artist out of those genres has headlined Glastonbury.

In 2008, rapper Jay Z was a controversial choice to play at the festival.

At the time, Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher called hip hop at Glastonbury "wrong", while critics also blamed the rapper for slow ticket sales.

In a nod to Gallagher, Grammy Award-winner Jay Z took to the stage to the strains of the band's huge hit "Wonderwall".

Glastonbury organisers called that perfomance a 'triumph'.

2019 will mark Stormzy's third time at the festival, as it returns from a year off.

Held annually on a dairy farm in southwest England, Glastonbury took a so-called fallow year in 2018 to give the land and local residents a break.

It's slated to take place from June 26 to 30, with a host of big names expected to take to the stage, entertaining thousands of revellers.
